By TyRon Wells
It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we all look forward to bringing in some holiday cheer to our lovely homes or businesses. The past year has been an absolute whirlwind dealing with the effects of the pandemic and we all can use a little joy, that can be fun as well as reducing stress.
1. Choose a theme to develop your color palette
Having a theme for your holiday decor is an easy tip to get started on decorating. Whether you are going the route of traditional, whimsical, modern or an opulent holiday experience, selecting a theme will ensure that your decoration will be impeccable. You can never go wrong with your traditional colors (red, green and gold) and if you want to play it safe or create decor that actually lives in the space of your home or business, it can reflect your personality. Together, your theme will create a memorable experience for yourself and holiday visitors, it also serves as a guide when purchasing holiday decor and making decisions.
2. The entryway says “Happy Holidays”
A nice greeting into your home/business is one of the best holiday design tips that will most definitely sets the tone for the occasion. Whether it is a gorgeous wreath on the door or take it up notch by trimming your door with a garland and lights. There’s an infinite number of design possibilities that can elevate your exterior holiday experience such as: Trimming the house, trees, bushes and walkway with lights, adding decor to the mailbox, adding wreaths to your windows, etc.
3. Incorporate family keepsake ornaments
Incorporate family keepsake ornaments on your tree and if you have multiple trees, design one just for family keepsake ornaments Family time is always a memory that can be everlasting, especially during the holidays. This can be a time to incorporate those family ornaments from down through the years. I personally love designing trees that have keepsake ornaments, it most definitely becomes a conversational piece and a reflective moment. When I travel, I make a point to grab an ornament to place on my jewel tone tree. Even though I don’t have children, seeing those keepsakes allows me to reflect on the enjoyable times I had, in the midst of celebrating the
4. Deck out your bar
I love to host, especially during the holidays and love to incorporate my bar cart in my holiday design. If you have a bar area, decorate it with those holiday touches such as an empty vase filled with ornaments. If you are a lover of fresh flowers, take a trip to the store and pick out some flowers and add them to the bar too. Oh, and make sure your glasses and bar essentials are accessible for your guests. We are still in the midst of a pandemic so if you don’t want to use your glassware, take a trip over to Amazon and order some nice durable disposable bar essentials.
5. Use timers on your lights
Who wouldn’t love to come home and you are greeted with your holiday decor. Imagine pulling up to your home and the holiday lights are on, you can see your gorgeous tree through the windows and it screams “HAPPY HOLIDAYS”. Going back to holiday tip #2, it completely sets the mood. After a day of “adulting”, it’s the perfect ending to an evening. Apply timers to your holiday decor to come on at dusk and turn off at dawn.
6. Hire a professional designer
If you don’t have the time to install your holiday decor, it is perfectly fine to hire a professional holiday designer. Most holiday designers provide install and uninstall services, as well as curating what your holiday designing will entail whether it's for your home or business. I enjoy installing holiday decor for my clients, in most cases it turns into a social gathering where they invite friends over for a tree trimming gathering. You can sit back, relax, drink your favorite holiday beverage and enjoy the magic unfold.
